Westwood Cemetery
The Woodville Township Cemeteries are a fine example of corporate gift giving, community involvement, and voter support. The Woodville Township Trustees employ seasonal workers to maintain the cemetery in the spring and fall.
In 1956, the Woodville Township Trustees decided to establish a second cemetery and approached the Woodville Civic Club for assistance. Standard Lime & Stone of Baltimore, Maryland donated $25,000 for the creation of a new 15-acre cemetery located off State Route 582. The front part of this parcel was developed. Woodville Lime & Chemical agreed to furnish the stone and equipment for the project.
To complete the project more funds were needed, so the Woodville Township Trustees went to the voters and a levy was approved. The original plan was developed by former Woodville resident Alton Weigel. The first burial was Fred O’Connor on May 21, 1959.
Currently, Woodville Township collects a 1/2 mill levy on property taxes for cemetery maintenance. There are about 550 plots available, with approximately 20 plots sold each year. The undeveloped farmland behind Westwood is a part of the original 15 acre parcel purchased in 1956 and is earmarked for future expansion of the cemetery when needed.
